reset webmin root using ssh

Want to Reset Webmin Root Password via SSH on AWS and Other VPS?

Since long time; I am experimenting on Linux and Windows VPS (Virtual Private Servers). Even if I am not an Full Server Administrator; I must say that I found that I am very good at it. 😀

Webmin is a wonderful thing if worked out properly. It is a very powerful Server Administration Panel. Needs more work though but I believe that it gives much more control than Kloxo or any other free panel.

I started experimenting with AWS (Amazon Web Services) Elastic Cloud Computing 2 (EC2) lately and found it wonderful. I will write to-do guides on it with many aspects which other never tried to explain.

However there is one nasty thing with AWS that it uses AMI (Amazon Machine Image) and AMIs uses Certificates instead of root access password. So; if you installed Webmin on AWS or you just lost your Webmin Password on any VPS here is what you have to do;

1. Login to Server via SSH (using putty etc). This is common on both VPS and AWS EC2.

2. Copy paste the following command

sudo /usr/libexec/webmin/changepass.pl /etc/webmin root PWD

Where PWD is your new password which you want to set.

3. Enter – Result code shall be self explaining about what happened.

4. Go to your Webmin via “YourIPAddress:10000” and try your new password with user ‘root’.

Have fun!
